indoor air quality test for Benzene

What is Benzene?

Benzene is classified by the EPA as a “known human carcinogen.” It has been directly linked to different kinds of cancer and specifically linked to leukemia. The main indoor sources of this chemical are tobacco smoke, stored fuels and paint supplies, and vehicle emissions from automobiles, lawn mowers, and snow blowers in attached garages.

Benzene is derived from petroleum, and currently comprises 1% of every gallon of gasoline. Under proposed regulations by the EPA, benzene in all U.S. gasoline will be reduced to 0.62% per gallon beginning in January 2011. Benzene is released by evaporation into the air at room temperature, and is also a by-product of fuel combustion, including tobacco smoke.

In addition to causing cancer, long-term exposure to benzene can cause damage to the neurological and immune systems. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of this chemical causes dizziness, nausea, headaches and possible fainting. Benzene poses a potentially greater health hazard to children and pregnant women.
